Keeping your pool crystal clear blue during the Florida summer is not an easy or cheap task. It requires viligance, dedication, and a bit of know-how to maintain that aqua color. Luckily, once you’ve gotten the hang of it maintaining it is relatively simple. We’re here to walk you through the simple steps of keeping your pool clean.
1.) Prevent Algae Growth with Chlorine
Preventing algae growth is relatively simple, you have to ensure that the Chlorine in your pool is maintained at 1PPM (part per million). Too little and the algae may bloom, too much and the pool becomes unswimmable. So what’s your best bet at keeping the levels correct? Test kits! Kits like the image featured below take only a few seconds and will let you know whether or not your levels are too high are too low. Continue to add chlorine in increments until your test levels are just about right. Once you get the hang of your pool size and how much you will need to add, it becomes a routine!
2.) Maintain Chlorine Levels Over a Length of Time
Once you have your pool chlorinated to the correct level, you must attempt to maintain that chlorination for as long as possible. A very simple and efficient method of doing so is with chlorine tablets. Either purchase a tablet floater to reside in your pool, or simply drop a few tablets into the pool trap. The water will circulate and slowly dissolve these tablets over time to maintain chlorine levels.
An additional pro-tip with these chlorine tablets are to rub them on any algae blooms growing on the sides of your pool. Sometimes the pool brush can’t scrub these spots off and by rubbing the tablets on them you will kill them directly.
3.) Clean Your Filter Frequently
As you can see, a dirty filter will only reintroduce algae into your swimming pool over time. We highly recommend using a high-pressure hose and some Dawn dish soap. The dish soap helps remove any oil or hair that may have accumulated in the filters (especially if you have dogs that love to swim).
4.) Brush The Sides of Your Pool and Invest in a Vacuum
While last on the list, it is certainly not the least important. Brushing the sides of your pool frequently will stir any algae blooming back into the chlorinated mix, ensuring that the chemicals do their work. Additionally, a vacuum along the floor bottom will pull and residual algae particles settled there into the filter to be removed. While it is a bit more of an investment and has its own additional mechanical issues, it will certainly assist in keeping your pool blue!
